For podcast producers. For video editors. For content producers working for themselves.
Self Employed Somehow
Shared resources, real support, and people who actually get what you do.
The gap
The hardest calls in freelancing aren't technical. They're the ones you make with nobody to check them against.
Every rate rise. Every risky client call. Easier when you're not the only one who's made it.
Most podcast producers and video editors will tell you the hardest part isn't the work. It's landing clients. Figuring out what to charge. Tracking the money and managing the clients once you have them. Doing all of it without anyone around who actually gets what that's like.
Self Employed Somehow is a small, free community for podcast producers, video editors and content producers, built around shared resources and real support, from people already doing this. Not a course. Not people selling you a plan. Just help with the parts nobody prepared you for, isolation included.
Getting clients, tracking money and keeping on top of it all.
Not vague encouragement. Straight answers when you're stuck.
Other people building alone too, in the same room.
Not gurus. People who've actually built a profitable podcast or video business, not just talked about one.
Fill the gaps your client has without hiring anyone. Other podcast and video people in the room, reliable enough to actually bring in.
Better together
Take the problem to the group before you take the solution to your client.
Talk it through with people who've solved something similar, then walk into that client call backed by more than your own head. Bring a real client's problem to the group and look at what they actually need together, the problems you might have missed and the solutions already sitting in the room. A client needs their podcast cut into clips for social, there's an editor already in the group who can step in.
Problems you'd have missed on your own, sitting right there once someone else looks with you.
You're not guessing what the client needs, you already talked it through with people who'd know.
The client's podcast needs to become short clips for social, you don't do that. Team up with someone in the group who does, and pitch it to them together.
Also in the group
The places people are actually finding work right now, not just told to network more.
The outreach that's actually worked, shared as it happened, not tidied up for a class.
What to charge, how to hold your nerve and how to read what someone will actually pay.
The actual words people use to go from stranger to client without it feeling like a pitch.
Not just staying organised. Time and money systems that actually grow your income.
The founder
I quit a stable 9-5 and launched Podlad, my freelance production business.
Since then I've helped a lot of people go freelance, and supported plenty more who felt stuck along the way. I don't have all the answers. I do know we're better together, and I'm not scaling this past the point where I still know who's in it.
Right now that's podcast producers, video editors and content producers, dialing in from Ireland, the UK, South Africa and Italy, close enough in time zone that the monthly call lands at a decent hour for everyone.
What this actually is
Some people would call this an accountability group. No homework, no pressure, show up as much as you need to and no more than that.
From inside the group
One member raised his rate with zero client discussion. Nobody blinked.
Another landed a six figure client on Upwork without an Upwork profile.
Someone doubled their income with a tracking system that's just pen and paper.
One cold outreach method turned into somebody's full time freelance business.
How to join
There's no signup form. To keep the room the right size, everyone who wants in books a short call with me first. No pitch. Just a conversation to see if it's a fit.
